West Nile Virus Confirmed in Ohio Horses

The Ohio Department of Agriculture has confirmed the first two positive cases this year of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Ohio horses. A horse in Stark County confirmed with WNV was vaccinated once in the spring but did not receive a booster. The second horse’s county of origin and vaccination history are not yet known. The spread of WNV in horses is preventable with proper vaccination and horse owners are urged to ensure their animal’s vaccine and boosters are up to date. More…

Grant Fuels Lifelong Learning Institute

In July, SourcePoint awarded a $10,000 grant to the Lifelong Learning Institute of Ohio Wesleyan University. The funds helped support the institute’s start-up costs, including the hiring of a part-time director, promotion, printing of course materials, and fall term evaluation.

The Lifelong Learning Institute is modeled after similar programs at campuses across the country. Volunteers teach courses in a relaxed, peer-centered environment. Topics are designed to appeal to those ages 55 and older. More…

Disaster Area Loans Available To Delaware County Farmers

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue recently designated seven Ohio counties as primary natural disaster areas. Producers who suffered losses due to two separate disaster events may be eligible for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans.

This natural disaster designation allows FSA to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters. Emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation or the refinance of certain debts.
