Welcome back to Summer Road Trips for 2022!

This year we’re continuing our weekly look at unique events and attractions that are within an easy driving distance of Delaware County. For the first time in two years, we’re sharing events taking place in-person, although by all means please all ahead and verify what social distancing, masking, etc.

Of course, we regularly feature the many extraordinary places to visit right here in Delaware County and encourage our readers to get out and experience what is on offer in our own backyard.

If you have never been to a presentation by The Actors’ Theatre at Schiller Park in Columbus’ German Village, you really will be in for a treat if you take this particular road trip. We at 1812Blockhouse have been there in years past, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

The regular presentation of works of Shakespeare and other playwrights leads off this summer in truly high style with an open air production of the great bard’s “Hamlet, 1603,” a production of the first draft of the masterpiece.

Adapted and directed by Sarah Neville, a grieving son; a father’s ghost; a mother’s untimely remarriage: Shakespeare’s tragedy of Hamlet has long been among his best-known and most-celebrated plays. But before the familiar tale of delayed revenge, long scenes, and introspective speeches came Shakespeare’s earlier, younger, and much faster version. A (old) new take on the play audiences think they know, Hamlet, 1603 offers a rare opportunity to experience the exciting first draft of Shakespeare’s most famous work.

All performances are offered for FREE (donations accepted at intermission), or reserve a chair or blanket in advance. Premium boxes of 2 reserved zero-gravity chairs are available for $50, and basic boxes with a reserved ATC logo blanket (that you can keep after the show!) are $25. Reserve your boxes here.

Hamlet runs May 26 through June 19. Additional productions this year include:

  • A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens – June 23 through July 17
  • Queen Margaret by William Shakespeare – July 21 through August 14
  • King Hedley II by August Wilson – August 18 through September 4
