September 22 through December 12 – “Making the Delaware Mural Project,” documenting the work of California-based artist Brett Cook and featuring art by citizens who participated in previous community workshops and collaborated in the mural-creation process. The exhibit will be displayed in Gallery 2001 inside OWU’s Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Prior to its opening, Cook will be installing two outdoor murals – one at Andrews House, 39 W. Winter St., from September 15-18 and one at the Second Ward Community Center, 50A Ross St., September 19-22. The Gallery 2001 exhibit will open with Cook giving an artist talk at 2 PM September 22 in the Bayley Room, on the second floor of OWU’s Beeghly Library. His presentation will be followed by a reception at 2:30 PM in the first-floor gallery. During the event, a shuttle will be available to take people to view both murals. Now through October 18 – “portraits” featuring works by Stephen Hoskins, OWU Class of 2007, in Mowry Alumni Gallery inside Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Hoskins renders portraits that reflect the complex perceptions we have of individuals based on our assumptions, experiences and recollections. Mowry Alumni Gallery is open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday when classes are in session. It is a satellite of the Richard M. Ross Art Museum. Admission is free. Now through October 20 – “After/Before” featuring photographs by JoAnn Verburg, OWU Class of 1972, at the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. A renowned photographer whose work has been shown at venues including New York’s iconic Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Verburg focuses her camera on mundane objects for “After/Before.” Alternating between still life and snapshot, she considers the items we consume, as well as their environmental impact when discarded and forgotten. 7:30 PM October 1 – Dave Kaufman, CEO of Encova Insurance, discusses “Integrated Leadership,” in the Benes Rooms of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Encova Insurance – formerly Motorists Insurance Group and BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co. – is ranked in the top 20 mutual insurance companies in the United States. A 1981 OWU graduate, Kaufman serves on several industry boards including the American Association of Insurance Services. He also is a board member of Columbus Partnership and Columbus Chamber of Commerce. He is the founder of Future Possibilities Inc., a nonprofit organization that delivers a life-skills coaching program to inner-city youth in Columbus. His presentation is Ohio Wesleyan’s 2019 Robert L. Milligan Leaders in Business Lecture, organized by the Woltemade Center for Economics, Business and Entrepreneurship. Admission is free. 6:30 PM Oct. 3 – OWU’s Hispanic Film Festival presents a screening and discussion of “Birdboy,” in Room 312 of the R.W. Corns Building, 78 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Based on the comic Psiconautas by Alberto Vazquez, this 2015 animated coming-of-age film from Spain follows the title character, a shy outcast in a post-apocalyptic society, and Dinky, a teenage mouse runaway fleeing her desolate island home. (Spanish with English subtitles.) The festival is hosted by Ohio Wesleyan’s Department of Modern Foreign Languages, Spanish Program, in collaboration with the Film Studies Program, Latin American Studies Program, Global Studies Institute, and VIVA Latinx student organization. The panel will include Memme Onwudiwe, Class of 2015, a double-major in international studies and French; Carolyn Thompson, Class of 2014, a triple-major in history, Spanish, and Latin American studies; and Emma Drongowski, Class of 2016, a politics and government major. 8 PM October 4-5 and 2 PM October 6 – “The Country House” by Donald Margulies. A theatrical family and friends return to a summer home in the Berkshires. Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Margulies provides a witty, yet piercing look at relationships as a family of performers come to terms with the roles they play in each other’s lives. Directed by faculty member Elane Denny. “The Country House” will be performed on the Main Stage inside Ohio Wesleyan’s Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Helal, OWU Class of 2003, is the author of “Invasive species,” described as “a hybrid of poetry and prose that strips bare the United States’ stance on foreigners and immigrants.” Lemmon, OWU Class of 1985, is the author of three books of poetry, including “The Miracles,” containing glimpses of her children and their father, who died in a senseless accident, making “heartbreaking leaps in time, finding beauty and solace in small, perfect moments” Both writers are faculty members at the Fashion Institute of Technology, State University of New York. Malick is a 1972 OWU graduate. “Love Letters” is an emotionally rich love story between childhood friends – dutiful lawyer Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and the lively artist Melissa Gardner – as their bittersweet relationship unfolds through the reading of the letters of their lifelong correspondence. Laura and her two children travel from Argentina to Spain to attend her sister’s wedding in this 2018 film. Glatthaar, Ph.D., Stephenson Distinguished Professor at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, discusses “Generalship and Army Culture: A Study of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and the Union Army of the Potomac.” He will speak in Benes Room B of OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware. A 1978 Ohio Wesleyan graduate, Glatthaar’s books include “The American Military: A Concise History,” “Soldiering in the Army of Northern Virginia: A Statistical Portrait of the Troops Who Served under Robert E. Lee (Civil War America),” and “Forged in Battle: The Civil War Alliance of Black Soldiers and White Officers.” Glatthaar’s presentation is the 2019 Richard W. 6:30 PM October 29 – OWU’s Hispanic Film Festival presents a screening and discussion of “Everybody Leaves,” in Room 312 of the R.W. Corns Building, 78 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. Featuring a cast consisting mostly of expatriate Cuban actors, this 2015 film is a celebration of freedom and a confrontation of the authoritarian Cuban regime of the 1980s, which led to one of the country’s worst economic crises. It was shot in Colombia because the director didn’t get permission to film in Cuba. (Spanish with English subtitles.) The festival is hosted by Ohio Wesleyan’s Department of Modern Foreign Languages, Spanish Program, in collaboration with the Film Studies Program, Latin American Studies Program, Global Studies Institute, and VIVA Latinx student organization.
