National Corn Board Confirms Delaware Countian As Director

The Corn Board recently confirmed Kelly Harsh of Ohio as its newest director. Kelly grows corn and soybeans on her family operation in Delaware.

Kelly will serve a one-year term on the Corn Board, a position that opened up when Dennis McNinch resigned his seat to spend more time with his family and on his farm.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the board, but the demands of the farm have forced me to focus my attention on it right now. I’ve served with Kelly and know she’ll be an outstanding addition to the board,” said McNinch. More…

The folks at Stratford Ecological Center are hosting classes on Regenerative Agriculture as their 2021 Farm Series for Adults.

The series will present Stratford’s farmer, Jeff Dickinson, as well as other experts in an exploration of the principles and practices of a healthy food system. Whether you are interested in farming or would simply like to learn more about food agriculture, this series will take you “behind the scenes” for a first-hand experience on a real working farm.

Local Farmers Eligible For Emergency Loans

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue has designated three Ohio counties as primary natural disaster areas, while making producers in eight others eligible for loans.

Producers who suffered losses due to recent natural disasters may be eligible for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans.

This natural disaster designation allows FSA to extend much-needed emergency credit to producers recovering from natural disasters. Emergency loans can be used to meet various recovery needs including the replacement of essential items such as equipment or livestock, reorganization of a farming operation or the refinance of certain debts. Local Students Receive Ohio Farm Bureau Scholarships

When recipients of the Ohio Farm Bureau’s several scholarships were announced recently, Delaware County students were very well represented.

One local student, Sarah Lehner, received a total of four scholarships. She and her family operate Dee Lehner Farms in Delaware.

Over $57,000 in scholarships were awarded in various categories that recognize academic effort, community engagement, and career interests that link agriculture to community service, education, or scientific research, according to the Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation. More…

Delaware’s Heritage Cooperative Inc. has announced it has exercised the option to purchase the feed, grain, trucking and agronomy assets of Hanby Farms Inc of Nashport, Ohio. This includes the Performance Feed brand established in 1983.

Assistance Available For Ohio, Delaware County Wetlands

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) encourages people and groups wanting to restore and protect critical wetlands to consider enrolling their property into conservation easements.

This year, the NRCS will invest in technical and financial assistance to help private landowners, tribes and other groups protect these valuable lands. Efforts will be focused on restoring previously drained agricultural lands and protecting the restored wetlands with easements. Natural Disaster Designations Declared For 40 Ohio Counties, Including Delaware

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has encouraged farmers in 40 Ohio counties, including Delaware County, to seek potential relief from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) following the USDA Secretarial disaster designation in their counties or contiguous counties due to rain, flooding, or other weather conditions.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, in letters dated July 25, 2019, designated several counties as primary natural disaster areas due to production losses caused by extreme weather events that occurred during the 2019 crop year. More…
