MTSO Requiring Vaccinations For On Campus Instruction

One by one, local and regional school districts and institutions of higher learning are adopting public health protocols to guide students, staff, and visitors as the new academic year nears.

This is nowhere more true than at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO), south of Delaware. There, the curriculum will be delivered both in person and online — with a clear line between the two.

President Jay Rundell recently shared plans to “…move toward the robust campus experience we cherish at MTSO, including in-person classes and events.” He added, “But for unexpected circumstances or developments, the MTSO curriculum will be available both on campus and remotely beginning this fall and for the foreseeable future.” More…

MTSO Hosts Celebration Of Arts That Promote Social Justice

Methodist Theological School in Ohio will bring together visual and performing artists for a two-day event centered on the ways social justice is promoted through the arts. “The Art of Justice: A Multi-Genre Celebration of the Arts Within Social justice Movements,” will take place virtually over two days: noon to 4PM on April 30 and 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM on May 1. This special event is cosponsored by two MTSO initiatives, the Theological Commons and the Anti-Racism Task Force.

“The Art of Justice” will showcase music, poetry and visual arts through performances, workshops and scholar-led conversation. Presenters and performers include visual artist David Butler (pictured above), folk singer Bill Cohen, poet (and MTSO alum) Barbara Fant, and singer Paisha Thomas. More…

Theological Commons To Host Speaker On Immigrants And Sanctuary

The Methodist Theological School in Ohio’s Theological Commons is hosting speaker Isaac Villegas on February 23, who will share a free public lecture entitled, “Providing Sanctuary as Witness: Standing in Solidarity with Immigrants.”

The Theological Commons is a vehicle through which the School connects with the wider community. The goal is to present topics “at the intersections of religion, scholarship and society,” according to the School’s website. More…

Methodist Theological School Receives $1 Million Grant

Delaware County’s Methodist Theological School in Ohio has received a grant of $995,731 to help establish “Spaces for Thriving: Cultivating Authentic Pastors for Small Membership Churches and Communities of Color.” The project is part of Lilly Endowment Inc.’s Thriving in Ministry, an initiative that supports a variety of religious organizations across the nation as they create or strengthen programs that help pastors build relationships with experienced clergy who can serve as mentors and guide them through key leadership challenges in congregational ministry.

The central goals of MTSO’s project are to improve pastoral thriving through attention to well-being, authenticity in vocation and connections to fellow pastors. More…

MTSO Williams Institute To Feature Noted Lecturer

Scholar, author and activist Pamela Lightsey will deliver MTSO’s Williams Institute lectures November 5.

The first lecture, “Dying Towards Life: A Queer Womanist Theology of Hope,” begins at 1 p.m. The second, “Soul Tending Amidst Body Snatchers,” begins at 7 p.m. Both lectures will be held in the Alford Centrum on the MTSO campus, 3081 Columbus Pike in Delaware. MTSO Hosting Award-Winning Teacher For Two Years

The Methodist Theological School in Ohio has welcomed Kyle Eugene Brooks to teach homiletics and African and African Diaspora studies through a two-year Louisville Institute postdoctoral fellowship.

The Louisville Institute, a Lilly Endowment-funded program supporting those who lead and study North American religious institutions, chose Brooks for the award. The institute will provide compensation, insurance, and housing and moving benefits. More…

MTSO To Install New Dean

The Methodist Theological School in Ohio has announced the Installation details for its new dean.

The MTSO Board of Trustees voted May 25 to appoint Valerie Bridgeman to a three-year term as dean and vice president for academic affairs, beginning July 1. Bridgeman, who has served as interim academic dean since July 1, 2017, was nominated by President Jay Rundell with the concurrence of the faculty. More…
