In the midst of a backlog of submitted returns and with recent changes in the Internal Revenue Code, the Internal Revenue Service has announced that the individual tax filing deadline has been moved for the second year in a row.

The traditional April 15 deadline is now May 17.

This also applies to individual taxpayers who earn income via self-employment.

This extension is automatic, and does not require the filing of additional forms or paperwork. It does not apply to estimated tax payments due on April 15.

Meanwhile, the City of Delaware has announced that it is following the IRS’ lead and extending its city filing deadline.

The City recently shared, “The income tax filing deadline for a resident of the City of Delaware or a worker who needs to file a city income tax return, has been extended to May 17. Both city and state of Ohio filing dates now align with the extended Internal Revenue Service deadline for filing federal tax returns.

The city’s deadlines are tied to the state’s deadlines in the Ohio Revised Code, so taxpayers will automatically receive this extension without having to file any additional forms. But the filing extension for 2020 city returns does not apply to 2021 declarations of estimated income tax or first quarter estimated income tax payments. These payments must still be made by April 15.”
