Slocum Hall on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University has been a busy place this spring.
Sitting just north of Sturges Hall, Slocum Hall was built as a library and opened in 1898. The University is undertaking an $11-million project to renovate the building including the restoration of its iconic Reading Room and its 70-foot-by-20-foot leaded glass ceiling. Starting today, Blind Eye Restoration of Columbus is hard at work restoring that glass ceiling. You might wonder how this would be accomplished as the work is meticulous and takes place so high off the ground; the answer is a centuries-old technique of using scaffolding to create a working surface.
This week, the company posted an image of workers on that surface in Slocum Hall (can be viewed here). In a photo comment, Blind Eye shared, “There’s so much dirt on this dome it almost looks like it’s painted rather than a skylight. We will fix that in no time.”
