Ohio Wesleyan University has announced its September 2022 lineup of public events. Unless otherwise noted, admission is free.
Aug. 24-Oct. 2, with Sept. 1 artists’ reception – “From OWU’s Studios,” featuring the works of Ohio Wesleyan Fine Arts faculty members Kristina Bogdanov, Frank Hobbs, Jeff Nilan, and Karen Weeks, in the front galleries of the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The exhibit demonstrates the artists’ mastery of a variety of media including ceramics, photography, painting, and printmaking. Aug. 24-Oct. 2, with Sept. 1 artist’s reception – “Then and Now: Fifty Years of Camera Vision,” featuring a photographic retrospective by Justin Kronewetter, retired OWU professor of Fine Arts and founding director of the Richard M. Ross Art Museum, in the West Gallery of the museum, 60 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The exhibit represents two career-defining bodies of work: black-and-white analog images from 1972 to 2000 and color digital prints from 2000 to the present day. Aug. 24, 2022–Jan. 4, 2023 – “Women’s Work,” featuring art created by Eliana Calle Saari in tribute to the work of women during the pandemic, in Gallery 2001 in Ohio Wesleyan’s Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave., Delaware. For several months in 2020, Saari was locked down behind the closed borders of the Caribbean Island of Antigua. The prints and books on display document her observations of the women of this island nation who continued to fulfill their duty as workers, mothers, and caretakers in a time of uncertainty, fear, and hope. This body of work is Saari’s love letter to women who show strength and perseverance in the face of adversity. Learn more at www.elianacallesaari.com. Sept. 6-Oct. 11, with Sept. 21 virtual artist’s talk – Works by Columbus-based artist and designer Nick Stull, in the Werner Gallery inside Edgar Hall, 35 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. A 2007 Ohio Wesleyan graduate, Stull specializes in murals, portraiture, painting, branding, design, and illustration. He will present an online artist talk at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 21. 8 p.m. Sept. 15 – New Vistas in Astronomy lecture featuring Ji Wang, Ph.D. assistant professor of Astronomy at The Ohio State University. In describing his work, Wang states: “I am interested in planets around other stars, i.e., exoplanets. I am observing stars and planets with the most powerful telescopes and building the most sensitive instruments in search of life on other planets.” He will speak at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike (U.S. 23), Delaware. 7 p.m. Sept. 20 – Nina Turner, groundbreaking Ohio politician and former co-chair of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, presents Ohio Wesleyan’s 2022-2023 Butler A. Jones Lecture on Race and Society. Turner made history in 2005 as the first African American woman to represent Ward 1 on the Cleveland City Council, and again in 2008 as the first African American woman to serve as a state senator in Ohio’s 25th District. Turner will speak in Room 301 of Merrick Hall, 65 S. Sandusky St., Delaware. The Butler A. Jones Lecture was established in 1995 in honor of Jones, Ph.D., a former university professor. In contributing to the quest for equality among races, Jones submitted 10 briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court in cases involving equal treatment of all citizens. The annual lecture is organized by OWU’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology and Social Justice Program. Admission is free. Learn more at owu.edu/soan.
