It’s already a banner year for the Central Ohio Symphony.
The organization was recently notified that it is receiving funding from the Grants for Arts Projects of the National Endowment for the Arts. At the same time, it is moving its office, effective Thursday, to the former Delaware County Sheriff’s Office on West Central Avenue.
The move was announced on the Symphony’s website.
Grants for Arts Projects (GAP) is the National Endowment for the Arts’ largest grants program for organizations. Matching grants range from $10,000 to $100,000, and are recommended for organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. In July 2022, 1,927 eligible applications were received requesting more than $98 million in FY23 support. This round, 1,129 projects are approved for funding totaling more than $31 million.
Project-based funding supports opportunities for public engagement with the arts and arts education, the integration of the arts with strategies that promote the health and well-being of people and communities, and the improvement of overall capacity and capabilities within the arts sector.
According to the National Endowment for the Arts, the Symphony is receiving $12,500 from the program to support a concert performance of new works with related educational activities. The concert will feature the world premiere of Sonia Morales’ Divertimento Caribeño No. 6 for trumpet and orchestra, commissioned by the Central Ohio Symphony, and the U.S. premiere of Christian Lindberg’s trumpet concerto Caballos Mágicos, both featuring trumpeter Pacho Flores. Lindberg’s work is a co-commission with orchestras in Turkey, Spain, and Sweden.
The orchestra’s Play It Again initiative focuses on second or third performances of contemporary works and will feature Beghilolia, by Chinese American and Ohio-trained composer Susanna Hancock. Educational activities may include pre-concert talks by the composers, master classes for college students, and community programs for youth. Intended Beneficiaries: The project will benefit audiences in and around Delaware, Ohio, as well as the composers. Intended Outcome: Beneficiaries access arts activities and programming.
