Special to 1808Delaware

In a post on its website, the City of Delaware extended sincere thanks to residents who voluntarily reduced their water usage over the past few days.

The city is now requesting even-odd watering of lawns. This means if your address ends in an even number, water on even numbered dates. If your address ends in an odd number, water on odd numbered dates. Again, this is only a voluntary request.

Vegetable gardens, flower beds and containers are NOT impacted by this request and can be watered and maintained as needed.

Lawn watering tips:

• Most lawns need only 1 inch of water per week, either from rain or manual watering, to provide green and healthy grass.
• It can be detrimental to your lawn to be overwatered or watered every day.
• The best time to water grass is at dawn or early in the evening.

The City of Delaware’s primary water source is the Olentangy River. The City has the capability to blend this river water with groundwater from wells drilled to more than 200 feet deep. Its water plant treats and distributes an average of 3.65 million gallons per day to more than 12,000 customers through 190 miles of water lines and 2,000 fire hydrants.
