In the heart of Delaware County, amidst the bustling city life, lies a tranquil oasis of history – the Oak Grove Cemetery. This serene location is the final resting place of many individuals who shaped the narrative of Delaware County and its environs. The upcoming walking tours of this historical haven promise a journey through time, recounting the stories of eminent figures buried here, whilst throwing light on the region’s rich past.

A Walk Through Time

The two-hour walking tours are meticulously planned to commence at 1:00 PM, with clusters of up to 12 participants embarking every 20 minutes thereafter. The final brigade will set off at 3:00 PM. The assembly point is at 334 S. Sandusky Street, Delaware, the address of the Cemetery. Each tour, designed to span roughly two hours, will take the attendees on a path primarily along the cemetery roads, with some deviations onto uneven terrain, making a comfortable pair of flat shoes a prudent choice for the journey.

Tales of Yore, Told Anew

As participants amble through the serene lanes of Oak Grove Cemetery, reenactors will breathe life into the tales of several distinguished Delaware denizens. The list includes Civil War veteran Robert Johnson, enterprising merchant Fred Bauereis, and the illustrious Prince Albert Mendenhall. The narrative will also honor Ezra Griswold, an integral part of the Delaware Gazette and a former postmaster, alongside Charlotte Denison, a revered educator and officer at the family-owned Delaware Clay Co. Clarence Hazelton’s contributions as a contractor and Delaware Street Superintendent, and Mary Grady, the namesake of Grady Memorial Hospital, will also be highlighted during the stroll.

Preparing for the Elements

The organizers have made provisions for inclement weather, ensuring that the historical excursion will proceed rain or shine. A final decision regarding the venue will be disclosed by 10:00 AM on the day, with a contingency plan to shift the event to The Barn at Stratford, located at 2690 Stratford Road, Delaware. Registered attendees will be notified via email, and updates will also be posted on the DCHS Facebook page.

Ticketing and More
