One local initiative is urging residents to be more conscious about their festive decorations, specifically holiday lights. As the holiday season approaches, this initiative stands out as an example of an eco-friendly celebration.
Sustainability Meets Festivity
The holidays are a time of joy, warmth, and, most noticeably, lights. Streets, homes, and trees twinkle with countless holiday string lights, creating a festive atmosphere. However, as these lights age, many are discarded, adding to the ever-growing waste problem. But, Delaware has found a way to combine festive celebrations with sustainability: a holiday string lights recycling program. Running from November 15 to January 15, 2024, this initiative encourages residents to recycle their old or burned-out string lights instead of throwing them away.
Making the Switch to Energy-Efficient Lighting
Beyond just recycling, the initiative also promotes a switch to energy-efficient LED lights. LED lights not only last longer but also consume a fraction of the power traditional bulbs do. By making the shift, households can enjoy the festive glow while also reducing their carbon footprint.
Convenient Drop-off Locations for Residents
Understanding the importance of convenience in ensuring the success of such initiatives, Delaware has established multiple drop-off locations for residents:
- Ashley Memorial Library: Located at 302 E. High St., Ashley
- Delaware City Public Works: Situated at 440 E. William St., Delaware
- Delaware Public Health District: Two locations at Delaware & Sunbury Offices – 470 S. Sandusky St., Delaware, and 137 Rt. 3, Sunbury
- Genoa Township Administration Office: Found at 5111 S. Old 3C Highway, Westerville.
- Delaware County District Library: All locations are participating.
- Price Farms Organics: Located at 4838 Warrensburg Rd., Delaware.
Each drop-off location will have specially decorated recycling bins, making it easy for participants to spot.
