The Transportation Review Advisory Council (TRAC) has recentlyannounced the 2024 draft list for the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Major New Capacity Program. This unveiling marks a pivotal step in addressing the state’s growing infrastructure needs. With a substantial allocation of $127.3 million, the funding is set to revitalize 18 projects over the next four years, promising to reshape Ohio’s transportation landscape.

Delaware County Project: A Key Player in the Infrastructure Overhaul

Among the projects slated for this funding windfall is an initiative based in Delaware County. This project is poised to play a significant role in enhancing the region’s infrastructure, underscoring the state’s commitment to developing its transportation network. Stakeholders and the public are invited to share their insights on this draft list by emailing [email protected] until February 23, before TRAC finalizes the list on February 28.

Economic Growth Meets Infrastructure Challenges

ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks highlighted the significance of these projects in light of Ohio’s economic landscape. “As businesses increasingly choose Ohio for expansion, our state faces the dual challenge of nurturing this economic growth while simultaneously upgrading our infrastructure to meet both current and future demands,” he stated. This balance between economic development and infrastructure enhancement is crucial for Ohio’s sustained growth and competitiveness.

A Rigorous Selection Process

The 2024 funding cycle saw 28 applications, reflecting the high demand and importance of infrastructure projects across Ohio. TRAC, following its annual application cycle, categorizes these projects into three tiers based on their development stages. This systematic approach ensures a strategic allocation of resources, addressing immediate construction needs while also planning for future infrastructure developments.

Tier I – Ready for Takeoff

The Tier I projects, including the Delaware County initiative, are earmarked for construction within the next four years. This includes additional funding for the I-71 at Sunbury Parkway new service interchange. Slated for FY2025, this project received $5,000,000 to alleviate the notorious congestion and safety issues at the existing I-71/US 36/SR 37 interchange. This upgrade is not just a traffic solution; it’s a strategic move to bolster the region’s economic vitality.

The Sunbury Parkway Project: A Multifaceted Benefit

This project promises numerous benefits, such as easing traffic congestion, enhancing access to key businesses like American Showa and Tanger Outlet Mall, and leveraging significant private investments. Additionally, it aims to increase safety by resolving the exit ramp queuing issues that currently plague I-71. This comprehensive approach aligns with Sunbury’s 2016 Thoroughfare Plan, ensuring coherence with existing urban development strategies.

As Ohio strides into a future of economic prosperity and infrastructural robustness, these projects, particularly the one in Delaware County, stand as testaments to the state’s commitment to its residents and businesses. By addressing today’s challenges and anticipating tomorrow’s needs, Ohio is setting a benchmark for state-wide infrastructural development.
