On Tuesday, May 14 at 12:00 PM Delaware County is setting the stage for a safer driving environment with the launch of this year’s Click It or Ticket campaign. The event, hosted at the Delaware Area Career Center (4565 Columbus Pike, Delaware), marks the beginning of a crucial initiative aimed at educating the public on the life-saving importance of wearing seat belts.

A Collaborative Effort for Road Safety

This campaign is a collaborative endeavor involving the SAFE Delaware County Coalition, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Delaware Public Health District, and the Delaware Area Career Center. Together, these organizations are dedicating their efforts to enhance road safety through both educational outreach and enforcement measures.

Following the kick-off, team members from the coalition will engage with motorists at the I-71 South rest stop. This engagement will include taking SAFE selfies and discussing the critical benefits of seat belt usage. This hands-on approach aims to directly connect with drivers and reinforce the safety message in a personal and impactful way.

The Stark Reality of Unbelted Crashes

Statistics from the Ohio State Highway Patrol paint a sobering picture: over the past five years, there have been more than 270,000 unbelted vehicle crashes in Ohio, leading to over 2,600 fatalities. These figures underscore the importance of the campaign and the need for continuous education and enforcement to change driver behaviors.

Lt. Robert Curry, commander of the Delaware Post, emphasizes the effectiveness of safety belts. “Properly wearing a safety belt saves lives and significantly reduces the risk of injuries,” he stated. Despite being a secondary violation, Ohio’s safety belt law will see strict enforcement by troopers during stops for other violations. Since 2019, over 274,000 seat belt citations have been issued, highlighting the ongoing challenges and the critical need for this campaign.

Resources for the Public

For those interested in learning more about seat belt safety or viewing related statistics, the Patrol’s Ohio Statistics and Analytics for Traffic Safety (OSTATS) offers a dedicated Safety Belt dashboard. This resource provides valuable insights and data to help educate the public and potentially save lives.
