The Delaware County Board of Commissioners convened for their regular meeting on May 20 with a robust agenda addressing various community and administrative matters. Vice President Barb Lewis opened the meeting, welcoming attendees and asking former Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Sean Miller, now with Ohio EMA, to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
Key Resolutions Passed
Approvals and Hearings
Several key resolutions were swiftly approved during the meeting:
- Electronic Record of Proceedings: The commissioners approved the electronic record of the proceedings from the May 16 meeting.
- Purchase Orders and Payments: Resolution 24-42 approved various purchase orders, announcement certificates, and warrant payments, ensuring the smooth financial operations of the county.
- Griffith Watershed Drainage Improvement: Resolution 24-43 set the date, time, and place for the final hearing regarding the proposed Griffith No. 391 Watershed drainage improvement, a critical project for local water management.
Community Use of County Facilities
The commissioners also approved a facilities permit for the Delaware Area Chamber of Commerce to use the large meeting room at the Bixby Campus for their Leadership Delaware program on November 13-14, 2024. This approval underscores the county’s support for community engagement and leadership development.
Celebrating 50 Years of Preservation Parks District
A significant highlight of the meeting was the recognition of the Preservation Parks District of Delaware County on its 50th anniversary. Representatives Mary Van Haaften, Rich Niccum, and Glenn Marzluf attended to express their gratitude for the county’s support over the years. They celebrated the district’s achievements and shared plans for future parks, including the 230-acre McCammon Creek Park and the 450-acre park in Trenton Township. These developments aim to enhance the community’s connection with nature and accommodate the county’s growth.
“We are grateful for the early support and commitment toward protecting land and creating spaces for people to connect with nature,” said Van Haaften. The Ohio to Erie Trail’s near completion was also noted, with just one bridge in Sunbury remaining to be finished.
Tornado Damage Recovery and Federal Assistance
The meeting included a detailed update on the recovery efforts following the March 14 tornado that caused significant damage to homes and businesses in Delaware County. Ohio EMA’s Sean Miller outlined the coordination efforts that began immediately after the storm, leading to a presidential disaster declaration. This declaration unlocked federal resources from FEMA and the Small Business Administration (SBA) to assist affected residents.
Susan Jensen from FEMA reported that 151 registrations had been received for assistance, including help with rental support and other emergency needs. SBA representative Sharon D highlighted the availability of loans for homeowners and businesses to cover physical damages and personal property losses.
EMS Recognition and Infrastructure Updates
The commissioners took time to recognize the Delaware County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) team for their exceptional service and achievements. Deputy Director Eric McMullen from the regional Sewer District provided updates on ongoing projects, including a partial release of an easement and the progress of new sewer infrastructure. The commissioners approved plans for new housing developments, reflecting the county’s continued growth and development.
