Delaware County is emerging as Ohio’s central hub for growth, distinguishing itself from neighboring Franklin County. In recent years, Delaware County has welcomed over 17,000 new residents—a stark contrast to Franklin’s 2,000. This influx is not just numbers but a vibrant indicator of the area’s escalating appeal. NBC 4 News has launched the ‘Developing Delaware’ series to dive into the dynamics behind this expansion.

Growth Challenges and Opportunities

The challenge of managing such rapid growth is complex. The county grapples with both opportunities and hurdles, particularly in managing essential services like sewage and water treatment. Delaware’s strategic response includes a comprehensive master plan projecting $265 million in infrastructure upgrades over the next 15 years. The goal is clear: accommodate growth smartly while maintaining the quality of life that attracts new residents.

Employment and Economic Drivers

Delaware County benefits significantly from its proximity to Columbus, hosting major employers like Chase near Polaris. Recent developments have spotlighted areas previously quiet, now bustling due to large-scale projects like those from Honda and Intel. These developments have transformed the landscape, promising more jobs and possibly more traffic, especially on U.S. Route 23.

State and Local Responses to Traffic Increases

The increase in traffic has pushed the capacity of local infrastructure, prompting significant state and local government responses. Governor DeWine recently announced an ambitious plan to streamline traffic on U.S. 23, reducing stop lights significantly and planning for a multi-billion dollar investment to accommodate the increased vehicular load. Such initiatives reflect a proactive approach to infrastructure challenges, ensuring that growth is supported by adequate planning.

Enhancing Quality of Life Through Infrastructure

Beyond economic growth, Delaware County is also focusing on quality of life enhancements. Plans for the next five years include $150 million in road improvements. However, the county’s vision extends to recreational avenues like parks and trails, crucial for sustaining community well-being and supporting residential and business expansion.

As Delaware County continues to attract residents, the question of housing and community infrastructure remains pertinent. With new housing developments on the rise, the region is not just growing—it’s thriving, setting a benchmark for managing suburban expansion in Ohio.
