Society to Present the Founding History of Ohio Wesleyan University

The Delaware County Historical Society invites the community to an engaging and insightful evening exploring the early history of Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU), featuring a portrayal of one of its founding figures, Reverend Adam Poe. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 23rd, at 7:00 PM at The Barn at Stratford, located at 2690 Stratford Road, Delaware.

Entitled “Be Careful What You Let Upset You! How I Got From Circuit Rider to a Founder of a University,” the program promises to shed light on the tumultuous and inspiring journey of Rev. Adam Poe, an elder in the Methodist Episcopal Church, who played a pivotal role in the establishment of OWU. Reverend Poe will be portrayed by OWU University Chaplain Emeritus Jon R. Powers, whose storytelling brings history to life in a captivating manner.

Poe’s vision and leadership helped secure the university’s charter in 1842, turning his dream into reality and positioning OWU as one of the nation’s leading liberal arts institutions. The presentation will highlight how Rev. Poe’s resolve and collaboration with other local Methodist leaders and Delaware residents led to the founding of what is now a cornerstone of higher education in the region.

The event will take place at The Barn at Stratford, a historic site itself, offering an atmospheric backdrop to this exploration of Delaware’s rich educational and religious heritage.

Admission is free, though donations to the Delaware County Historical Society are encouraged to support future programming.

For those wishing to attend, the society encourages pre-registration, which can be completed by scanning the QR code featured on the event’s promotional materials or by visiting their website at www.delawareohiohistory.org.

Don’t miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the story of one man’s journey from a humble circuit rider to the founder of one of Ohio’s most respected universities. The Delaware County Historical Society continues its mission of preserving and promoting the area’s history, offering events that educate and inspire the community.
