The City of Sunbury is making strides in infrastructure development, with updates on major upcoming projects discussed at last week’s City Council meeting. As shared by City Engineer Carla Odebralski, these initiatives include expanding the Wastewater Treatment Plant, widening E. Granville Street, and planning for next year’s street improvements.
Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion
The expansion of the Sunbury Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is a significant step for the city. Currently, bids are open for contractors interested in this expansion, which aims to increase capacity and efficiency. To attract a more competitive pool of contractors, a bid submission delay has been granted, with the final opening set for Wednesday, October 23.
Key dates for Council action include:
- November 6: The first readings will be held to award the construction contract for WWTP improvements, alongside the construction inspection contract. Proposals for this inspection were submitted last month, and city staff are currently reviewing them. A finalized scope and fee will be presented at the November council meeting.
2025 Street Program Underway
Planning for Sunbury’s 2025 Street Program has begun, with the selection of streets for improvement underway. The City aims to apply for funding from the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) to support these efforts. Feedback from the Services Committee will help finalize plans before the funding application, which is due on November 1.
Council action schedule:
- October 30: Council will consider approving the application for OPWC funding.
These improvements will address both immediate infrastructure needs and longer-term road quality, ensuring safe and accessible streets for residents.
E. Granville Street Widening Project
Another ambitious project, the E. Granville Street Widening, aims to enhance safety and convenience for both pedestrians and motorists along this key stretch of State Route 37. Plans include widening and reconstructing approximately 1,500 feet of the road, between Morning Street and Letts Avenue, as well as removing old, non-functional bridge abutments to make way for a new pedestrian bridge.
This pedestrian bridge will play a crucial role in connecting the Ohio-to-Erie Trail over SR 37, offering a much-needed safe passageway for pedestrians. The consultant selection for the design of this project is nearly finalized, with a scoping meeting planned for October 17.
Council action schedule:
- November 6: The first reading to approve the design contract will take place.
Construction for the widening project is anticipated to begin in 2027, reflecting the city’s focus on long-term urban planning and sustainable growth.
