The Delaware, Knox, Marion, and Morrow (DKMM) Solid Waste District is once again providing residents with an opportunity to safely dispose of electronic waste and household hazardous materials through its 2025 Special Collection Options program. The initiative, which runs from April to September, is designed to promote responsible waste management and environmental sustainability across the four-county district.
Electronics and Television Disposal
Residents looking to dispose of old electronics and televisions can schedule an appointment for electronics drop-off at designated locations in Delaware and Mt. Gilead. The program allows for the disposal of most electronic devices for free, while televisions and CRT monitors require a $20 disposal fee each. A maximum of three units is allowed per household.
Acceptable items include computers, DVD players, fax machines, printers, routers, and small appliances, among others. However, large appliances, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers are not accepted. Additionally, DKMM will host a one-day electronics drop-off event on October 4 at the Marion County Fairgrounds for those who may not be able to schedule an appointment earlier in the year.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection
For hazardous waste materials, DKMM offers a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month between April and September, by appointment only. Collection sites in Delaware and Mt. Vernon will accept various hazardous items, including automotive fluids, batteries, fire extinguishers, pesticides, and propane cylinders. The program ensures these materials are handled properly, reducing environmental risks and promoting public health.
Participants are required to pay a $1 per pound disposal fee for hazardous materials and must adhere to program limitations, such as a 10-can maximum for latex paint and a 5-gallon limit for containers. Notably, containers will not be returned once waste is disposed of.
Recycling Beyond the Collection Program
In addition to DKMM’s seasonal collection events, residents seeking year-round disposal options for hazardous waste can turn to Environmental Enterprises, Inc. (EEI), located in Columbus, OH. The facility accepts hazardous materials for a fee and provides another environmentally responsible avenue for waste disposal. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (614) 294-1300.
Encouraging Responsible Waste Disposal
The DKMM Solid Waste District emphasizes the importance of proper waste disposal by requiring residents to provide proof of residency through a driver’s license or utility bill. By enforcing these policies, DKMM ensures that the program benefits the local communities it serves.
These collection efforts not only help residents dispose of unwanted items safely but also reduce landfill waste, prevent environmental contamination, and promote sustainability. For more details, residents can visit DKMM.org or email [email protected] to schedule an appointment.
