Before the first splash of the season, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft is helping Delaware County boaters ensure their vessels are safe and ready for the water. Through its free, voluntary vessel safety checks, ODNR is making it easier than ever for boaters to meet legal requirements—and enjoy Ohio’s lakes with confidence.
These inspections, led by trained Natural Resources Officers, offer a stress-free way to verify that your boat is equipped with everything you need to comply with state law, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, and functioning navigation lights.

“Vessel safety checks are a great opportunity for boaters to make sure their boats and trailers are ready for the season before hitting the water,” said Cindy Bellar, ODNR’s Boating Law Administrator. “These inspections give boaters peace of mind, knowing they have the necessary equipment to meet legal requirements and stay safe on the water.”
Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a first-time pontoon pilot, the vessel safety check is a smart step that could prevent a ruined day—or a dangerous situation—later on.
What to Expect at the Safety Check
Boaters should bring their fully prepped vessels, just as if they were heading out for a day on the water. Officers will walk through each boat, ensuring the proper gear is onboard. Those who meet the safety standards will receive an official Vessel Safety Check (VSC) decal, visible proof of their compliance with Ohio boating regulations.
If something’s missing or not up to par, it’s not a citation—officers will provide constructive feedback on what needs to be addressed.
Delaware County Checkpoint Schedule
This year’s safety checks will be hosted at the Delaware State Park Main Marina boat ramp and Alum Creek’s New Galena boat ramp on the following dates:
- Sunday, April 6 – Delaware State Park – 4 PM to 6 PM
- Saturday, April 12 – Delaware State Park – 8 AM to 10 AM
- Sunday, April 27 – Delaware State Park – 8 AM to 10 AM
- Alum Creek State Park – New Galena Ramp – 4 PM to 6 PM
- Saturday, May 17 – Delaware State Park – 8 AM to 10 AM
No registration is required—just show up, gear up, and get checked.
Can’t Make It? There’s Still a Way
If you’re unable to attend a scheduled safety check, you can still arrange one through your nearest ODNR watercraft office. And to prepare, visit ohiodnr.gov/boating to download the Ohio Required Equipment chart tailored to your vessel type.
