If your New Year’s resolution involves meeting new people, getting more involved, or finally finding a group where you feel comfortable showing up as yourself, this upcoming virtual session is worth a look.

On Tuesday, January 6, at 12:00 PM, the Delaware County Board of Developmental Disabilities will host the next installment of its Supports Through the Lifespan series. The theme this time is Finding Belonging in the New Year, and the focus is practical, not abstract. This is a conversation about how people actually connect.

What the Session Is Really About

At its core, this session is about access. Not access in the policy sense, but access to people, activities, and communities that make life fuller. Representatives from several local organizations will walk through real options for social connection, from clubs and recreation programs to advocacy groups and book discussions. The goal is to help participants see what is available and figure out what might fit their interests, energy level, and comfort zone.

If “getting out there” has felt vague or intimidating, this session tries to make it concrete.

Who You’ll Hear From

Organizations participating include:

• Next Chapter Book Club
• Aktion Club
• People First
• ASCO
• Best Buddies
• Changing Spaces OH
• Recreation Unlimited
• Special Olympics

Each brings a different approach, which matters. Belonging does not look the same for everyone, and pretending otherwise usually leaves people out.

Why a Virtual Format Helps

Holding this session online lowers the barrier to entry. You can join from home, listen without pressure, and ask questions if and when you are ready. For many people, that alone makes participation possible.

It also allows family members, caregivers, and supporters to attend alongside those they support, which often leads to better follow-through afterward.

A Thought Worth Saying Out Loud

Community does not happen by accident, and it rarely appears just because the calendar turns to January. It usually starts when someone opens a door and says, here are some options, let’s talk about what might work. That is what this session is trying to do.
