A Delaware County library card can now open a children’s book in Arabic, Gujarati, Ukrainian, American Sign Language, and scores of other languages.
The Delaware County District Library has added LOTE4Kids, a digital collection of more than 10,000 audio-picture books and activities in more than 100 languages. More Than Words On A Screen
LOTE stands for Languages Other Than English. The collection is built around children’s picture books presented with professional narration by native speakers. Young readers can listen while following the text and illustrations. The service also includes bilingual titles, read-along options, and learning activities designed to build vocabulary and comprehension. New books and activities are added monthly, according to the library. That format can serve several purposes at once. A child learning English can hear a story first in a familiar language. A multilingual family can share books that reflect the language spoken at home. Other readers can encounter a language and culture they are beginning to study.
Spoken And Signed Stories
The collection reaches beyond translated text. Its catalog includes authentic narration in more than 100 spoken languages, from widely used global languages to those that can be difficult to find in a local children’s collection. LOTE4Kids also offers stories in five sign languages: American Sign Language, Australian Sign Language, British Sign Language, Irish Sign Language, and New Zealand Sign Language.
For teachers and caregivers, accompanying activities create a starting point for discussion or practice after the story ends. The resource is designed for use by families, schools, educators, and children developing skills in English or another language.

Cardholders can begin on the library’s research resources page and select LOTE4Kids. LOTE4Kids is not a general translation tool or a conventional language course. Its strength is narrower and more familiar: stories for children, made accessible in the languages families use and the languages they hope to learn.
