The Olentangy Board of Education addressed several significant issues at its October 8 meeting. Those items included an ongoing hazing investigation, enrollment growth, school capacity concerns, and plans to redraw attendance boundaries.
District Leaders Address Hazing Investigation
Board President Brandon Lester and Superintendent Todd Meyer both addressed the recent hazing incident involving members of the Olentangy Orange High School girls’ soccer program, emphasizing that hazing, harassment, intimidation, retaliation, and bullying have no place in district schools. With law enforcement and district investigations continuing, both leaders outlined efforts to strengthen prevention education, reporting procedures, student support, and the overall school culture. They also encouraged students, families, and community members to report concerns promptly. The district’s anonymous Stay Safe. Speak Up! Hotline remains available for reporting safety-related issues.
District officials said additional information and action steps would be shared at future Board meetings as the investigations progress.
Enrollment Continues to Climb
Olentangy Schools growth shows no signs of slowing down in the near future. The district reported an enrollment of 24,568 students in preschool through 12th grade for the 2026-27 academic year, an increase of 159 students compared with September 2025.
District projections suggest that growth is far from finished. Using housing development information, building permits, student enrollment patterns, and grade advancement data, the district’s Facilities Committee anticipates more than 2,000 additional students over the next decade.
That growth will place increasing pressure on school buildings. Middle schools are already operating at 104% of capacity, while elementary schools are projected to reach full utilization by the 2034-35 school year, even with the addition of Deer Haven Elementary.
At the high school level, the addition of the district’s fifth high school is expected to keep utilization just below 97% across all five high schools over the next decade. The Board also formally selected Olentangy Hyatts High School as the name of the new building. Its mascot and colors will be announced December 10.
Redistricting Decisions Coming in December
As the district prepares for additional students and buildings, families will have opportunities to comment on proposed changes to school attendance boundaries. Community forums are planned at each of Olentangy’s four existing high schools, with feedback being collected through mid-November. The Board expects to announce new boundaries at its December 10 meeting.
Those decisions will help determine how students are distributed among school buildings as residential development continues throughout the district.
Student Wellness Remains a Priority
The district’s Wellness Department also presented its evolving approach to supporting students and staff. The department is emphasizing prevention, early intervention, student input, conflict resolution, and the use of data to improve school environments and support learning. The goal is to identify concerns earlier, strengthen communication, and create healthier conditions for students and employees.
The presentation came during a meeting in which student safety and school culture were prominent topics, underscoring the district’s continuing focus on prevention and support.
