We’ve got a special Fourth of July edition of Summer Road Trips for the holiday.

This summer we’re taking a weekly look at unique summer festivals, events, and attractions that are within an easy driving distance of the Delaware area. We call these “Summer Road Trips,” and we’ll continue these weekly posts through August. One of the perks of living in central Ohio is its proximity to world-class entertainment, sporting opportunities, and more.

Of course, we want to share that there are many extraordinary places to visit right here in Delaware County this summer and encourage our readers to get out and experience what is on offer in our own backyard.

You have the opportunity this summer to play a game that Delaware native President Rutherford B. Hayes and his wife Lucy knew very well – and on the lawn of their house!

The Croquet Club plays croquet, a game popular during President Rutherford B. Hayes’ day, on the lawn on of the Hayes Home. Croquet club members can use the club’s equipment and Hayes Presidential Library & Museums’ courts, participate in all club events and receive a membership card and information packet. Annual memberships are $25 per person or $40 per couple. Non-members also are invited to play at any of the matches for a $5 fee.

There are many opportunities this summer to participate, including several this month. The fun takes place on the following dates and times:

 • Sunday, July 7 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
 • Wednesday, July 10 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
 • Sunday, July 28 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
 • Wednesday, July 31 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

On Sunday, July 14 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, the Hayes Presdential Center will host a “Guests Play Free Day.”

The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is America’s first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system. It is partially funded by the state of Ohio and affiliated with the Ohio History Connection. The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is located at Spiegel Grove at the corner of Hayes and Buckland avenues.
