Monarchs may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species. Its wings feature an easily recognizable black, orange, and white pattern, which may be responsible for its name. It is said that “monarch” was given in honor of King William III of England, whose secondary title “Prince of Orange” evokes the butterfly’s main color.

The eastern North American monarch population is notable for its annual southward late-summer/autumn migration from the northern and central United States and southern Canada to Florida and Mexico. During the fall migration, monarchs cover thousands of miles, with a corresponding multi-generational return north.

Speaking of migration, participants in Monarch Magic Weekend will tag and release live monarchs at 2 PM on both days, weather permitting.

The event takes place Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 5 PM. Deer Haven Park is at 4183 Liberty Road in Delaware. The event is free and is for all ages.
