This year we’re continuing our weekly look at unique events and attractions that are within an easy driving distance of Delaware County. We call these “Summer Road Trips.” Of course, we regularly feature the many extraordinary places to visit right here in Delaware County and encourage our readers to get out and experience what is on offer in our own backyard.

Today, we’re talking about treasure. Got your attention?

No, we’re not talking about buccaneers and buried gold, although there is an island and what some might consider “treasure” involved.

The “loot” is items on sale by businesses and community members up and down the streets and byways of Kelllys Island on Lake Erie. Treasure Island Day is being held this year on Saturday, September 12, it begins at 9 AM and will be over at 3 PM.

To participate, just get your treasure map at the Chamber of Commerce office at Seaway Marina, 240 East Lakeshore Drive, or at the Island Market across from the Kelleys Island State Park Campground.

Of course, with Kellys Island, getting there is half the fun. The Jet Express operates from Sandusky and Port Clinton, while the Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line departs from Marblehead. Once on the island, there are great places to east and drink; places to visit including museums and the famous glacial grooves; and lots of family activities such as putt putt golf and horseshoes.

While your’re on Kellys, be sure to take a moment and visit the History Museum for Butterfly Fest. At 11 AM, you can hear an informative presentation on the Monarch butterfly and watch butterfly banding. Participants can even adopt one of the winged creatures for their own.

The Kelleys Island History Museum will also be holding a bake sale, so bring your sweet tooth!
