After more than two decades without opening a new Central Ohio location, Trader Joe’s is preparing to expand its regional footprint with a standalone store in southern Delaware County. The popular specialty grocer is planned for 2109 Ikea Way, near the Polaris commercial corridor. The 12,500-square-foot building will become Trader Joe’s third Central Ohio store, joining existing locations near Easton Town Center and on Sawmill Road in Dublin.
The project marks a significant addition for residents of Delaware County and northern Franklin County, many of whom currently travel to Dublin or Easton for the chain’s private-label foods, frozen meals, snacks, produce, flowers and frequently changing seasonal products.
Built Specifically for Trader Joe’s
Unlike locations placed within an existing shopping center, the Ikea Way store will occupy a single-tenant building constructed specifically for Trader Joe’s. Plans call for 132 parking spaces surrounding the store, an unusually generous allocation for a chain whose crowded parking lots have become an almost legendary part of the Trader Joe’s shopping experience.
Columbus-based Ford & Associates Architects is designing the building, with Construction One, also based in Columbus, serving as general contractor. Oculus Inc. of St. Louis is handling the interior design work.
A city permit associated with the address lists nearly $942,000 in work connected to the project. An Ohio Environmental Protection Agency construction permit identifies the development as “Ikea Way Retail,” lists Polaris TJ LLC as the applicant and confirms that the 2.9-acre project site is in Delaware County.
A New Road and Room for Growth
The development will sit at the future intersection of Ikea Way and Ceres Drive. Ceres Drive is planned as a new connection between Ikea Way and Polaris Parkway, improving access through an area that has continued to attract retail, residential and entertainment investment. The road project will also open additional property for future development near the Trader Joe’s site.
The new store will place the grocer close to IKEA, Topgolf, Polaris Fashion Place and a growing collection of businesses along Gemini Place, Lyra Drive and Polaris Parkway. That location gives Trader Joe’s access to one of Central Ohio’s busiest regional shopping destinations while also bringing the company closer to the rapidly growing communities of southern Delaware County.
A Different Kind of Grocery Store
Trader Joe’s has built a national following without adopting the scale or format of a traditional supermarket. Its stores are comparatively small, and much of the merchandise is sold under the Trader Joe’s name. Shoppers encounter a mix of everyday groceries and less predictable offerings, from frozen international dishes and specialty cheeses to seasonal desserts and snacks that may disappear almost as quickly as they arrive.
That changing product selection has helped turn routine grocery trips into something closer to a treasure hunt. New items frequently become social media favorites, while discontinued products can inspire online petitions and expressions of genuine grief from longtime customers.
The company traces its history to 1967, when Joe Coulombe opened the first Trader Joe’s in Pasadena, California. It has since grown into a national chain while retaining its neighborhood-market identity and nautical-themed store culture.
Third Store, Wider Reach
Trader Joe’s currently operates one Columbus store at 3888 Townsfair Way near Easton and another at 6355 Sawmill Road in Dublin. The company’s Ohio directory also includes stores in the Cincinnati, Dayton and Cleveland areas. The Ikea Way location will fill a sizable geographic gap between the two existing Central Ohio stores while giving Delaware County residents their first Trader Joe’s closer to home.
An opening date has not yet been announced. Still, the filing of construction plans and the involvement of architectural, construction and interior-design teams indicate that the long-discussed possibility of another Central Ohio Trader Joe’s has moved firmly into the development stage.
For a region that has waited more than 20 years for a third location, the news is likely to generate excitement well before the first shelves are stocked.
