A bit over 20 years ago, Giant Eagle opened its first stores in the Columbus metro area.

One of the locations was at 55 Meadow Park Avenue off of US23, near Powell Road. That store will be closing its doors next month, with employees being offered positions as other area Giant Eagle locations.

The nearest such stores are in Powell and Westerville. Over 20 others dot the Columbus area map.

These are not the first first generation Giant Eagle stores to close, either nationally or in the Delaware County area. Four years ago, similar operations were shuttered on Dublin-Granville, Neil Avenue, and Hillard-Rome Road. Stores have closed in Pennsylvania and elsewhere as the chain does some repositioning in the market.

The Lewis Center Giant Eagle currently employs 115.

Giant Eagle began as a family operated business in the Pittsburgh area, with the first grocery opening in 1936. Today, the chain has over 400 retail locations and over 32,000 employees.
