Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik have announced a significant milestone in the state’s brownfield redevelopment efforts: $86.1 million in funding to clean up and transform 81 hazardous sites across 46 counties. Among the recipients, a Delaware County project with its innovative approach to community revitalization is included.

Delaware County’s Vision: 50 Channing Street Redevelopment

At the heart of this funding round is Delaware County’s transformative 50 Channing Street Redevelopment project. Spearheaded by the Delaware County Land Reutilization Corporation, this effort is set to receive $921,438 in state support for remediation and redevelopment.

The project centers on repurposing a former Delaware County Engineers’ property into a sustainable and vibrant community asset. Key aspects of the initiative include:

  • Hazard Mitigation: Removal of asbestos, lead paint, and demolition of three outdated structures, ensuring the site is safe for future development.
  • Affordable Housing: Construction of 44 affordable rental apartments and eight single-family homes, addressing the growing demand for accessible housing options in the region.
  • Sustainability Features: Integration of environmentally friendly building practices and installation of public utilities to support long-term sustainability.
  • Community Enrichment: Creation of new recreational spaces to enhance quality of life and foster community connection.

This project aligns perfectly with the program’s goals to revitalize neighborhoods and stimulate local economies. It demonstrates Delaware County’s commitment to turning challenges into opportunities that benefit residents and attract investment.

Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program: Transforming Communities

The Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program, launched in 2021 under the DeWine-Husted Administration, aims to repurpose hazardous and abandoned properties for productive use. This latest round of funding includes:

  • $82.1 million for 65 remediation projects.
  • $4 million for 16 assessment projects.

To date, the program has awarded $636 million across 86 counties, addressing over 600 sites and laying the groundwork for economic growth statewide.

The Future of 50 Channing Street: A Model for Success

The redevelopment of 50 Channing Street is a model for leveraging state support to achieve local goals. Once a blighted and hazardous area, the site is poised to become a hub of affordable living and community engagement.

By integrating sustainable practices and focusing on affordability, the project ensures long-term benefits for both current and future residents.

Revitalizing Ohio, One Brownfield at a Time

The Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program continues to demonstrate its value by addressing long-standing environmental challenges and creating opportunities for growth. Delaware County’s project exemplifies the transformative power of this program, offering a glimpse into what’s possible when communities and the state work together.
