The Delaware County Commissioners held their regular meeting on September 23 and covered a broad range of topics from financial approvals to community recognitions.

Key Resolutions Passed

The meeting kicked off with the approval of the minutes from the September 16, 2024 meeting, followed by various resolutions, including the authorization of purchase orders, payments, and intergovernmental agreements. Highlights included:

  • Annexation to Sunbury: Commissioners approved the annexation of 93.1 acres of land in Trenton Township to the City of Sunbury, a move that aligns with ongoing efforts to expand and develop the area.
  • Rutherford B. Hayes Day Proclamation: October 4th was declared Rutherford B. Hayes Day in Delaware County. Celebrations will include a morning tribute and an evening event, honoring the legacy of the 19th U.S. President who has strong ties to the county.
  • Support for Intersection Improvement Project: Commissioners endorsed a letter of support for the City of Delaware’s State Route 37, Central Avenue, and US Route 42 Lake Street intersection improvement project, highlighting ongoing infrastructure enhancements in the county.

Sheriff’s Office Achieves Major Accreditation

A significant moment in the meeting was the update from Sheriff Jeff Balzer, who proudly announced the Delaware County Jail’s accreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA). Sheriff Balzer, accompanied by his leadership team, noted that the jail’s accreditation, achieved after rigorous audits, placed it among the finest correctional facilities in the country.

“This is a major accomplishment for us,” Sheriff Balzer stated. “It’s about meeting and exceeding the best standards for correctional facilities, showing our commitment to the community.”

Intergovernmental Cooperation and IT Services

The Commissioners approved agreements to provide shared IT services to Berlin Township and the BST Fire District. Commissioner Merrill and Commissioner Benton praised the efforts to share resources, emphasizing the importance of covering costs and providing valuable services to local jurisdictions.

Support for School Resource Officers

The Sheriff also highlighted the importance of school resource officers (SROs) in maintaining safety across county schools. With 19 officers, including two sergeants, Delaware County has one of the largest SRO programs in Central Ohio. The Commissioners approved a resolution to start billing schools proportionally for the services of these sergeants, ensuring the sustainability of this essential program.

Community Recognition and Partnerships

The meeting also recognized ongoing community partnerships:

  • Tanger Outlets Donation: The Sheriff’s Office received a donation from Tanger Outlets to support the Peace Officer Memorial and other needs.
  • Support for Foster Care and Child Placement: Amendments to foster care service contracts were approved to ensure the county is prepared for emergency placements when necessary.

Fair Week Success Celebrated

Commissioners reflected on the recent Delaware County Fair, praising the event’s success and the community’s support for local youth through auctions and competitions. Commissioner Merill praised the quality of the people in our county who support these young people.
