By The City of Delaware
The City of Delaware invites residents and visitors to line the streets of downtown Delaware this Sunday, Nov. 1, for the annual Delaware Veterans Parade, a community tradition honoring the men and women who have served our nation.
The parade begins at 3 p.m. at the main gate of the Delaware County Fairgrounds, travels east down Pennsylvania Ave, then turns south and travels through downtown on Sandusky St., concluding on Wilmer Street. The largest veterans parade in Ohio will have nearly 200 units, with more than 1,600 participants taking part in this year’s celebration.
This year’s parade will hold special significance as Delaware commemorates the 20th anniversary of the safe return of the 454th Rebuild Transportation Company, known as “Delaware’s Own.”
In 2005, the U.S. Army Reserve unit departed Delaware to support Operation Iraqi Freedom. The company returned in November 2006, with every member safely home. Twenty years later, many of the unit’s soldiers, including Colonel Mike O’Neal and Command Sergeant Major Marty Mieras, will return to Delaware to participate in the parade and celebrate this milestone with the community.
The soldiers and their families will be honored for their service, sacrifices and the lasting impact they have made on the Delaware community. Their participation offers residents an opportunity to welcome these hometown heroes back and recognize the families who stood behind them throughout their service.
The annual parade serves as a heartfelt tribute to veterans of every generation and branch of service. From marching bands and military honor guards to floats, classic cars and motorcycles, the event brings the community together to express gratitude, preserve the stories of those who served and celebrate the spirit of patriotism that connects Delaware residents.
Residents are encouraged to arrive early, find a spot along the parade route and join their neighbors in showing appreciation for those who have served. Whether welcoming the 454th home once again or honoring veterans who have served in conflicts across generations, Sunday’s parade is an opportunity for the entire community to say thank you.
