Delaware’s east side is getting another place for an early coffee, quick breakfast or box of Timbits. Tim Hortons opens today, Wednesday, August 19, at 910 Sunbury Road, in front of Kohl’s and near the new McDonald’s and Raising Cane’s restaurants in the Glennwood Commons area.
The new restaurant becomes the chain’s third location within Delaware. The other two are at 89 W. William Street and 1163 Columbus Pike. Earlier reports placed the project at 900 Sunbury Road, the address used for the larger development parcel during the city approval process. Recent Tim Hortons hiring announcements identify the restaurant itself as 910 Sunbury Road.
The opening gives Tim Hortons a presence along one of Delaware’s busiest commercial corridors. Sunbury Road carries traffic between downtown Delaware, U.S. 23, Interstate 71 and rapidly growing neighborhoods east of the city.
From a Hockey Name to a Coffee Institution
Tim Hortons began with a single restaurant in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1964. Its founder and namesake, Tim Horton, was a National Hockey League defenseman who spent most of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The early menu centered on coffee and doughnuts. Horton partnered with the company’s first franchisee, Ron Joyce, in 1967, beginning the expansion that would turn the small Ontario business into one of Canada’s most recognizable brands. Timbits, the chain’s bite-sized doughnut treats, arrived in 1976. Tim Hortons entered the United States in 1984 with a restaurant in Tonawanda, New York, near Buffalo.
The menu has grown considerably since those early years. Along with its Original Blend coffee and doughnuts, today’s restaurants serve cold brew, iced and hot lattes, Iced Capp beverages, refreshers, breakfast sandwiches, bagels, wraps and other lunch selections. Tim Hortons says its Original Blend coffee continues to be brewed fresh throughout the day.
The company is now part of Restaurant Brands International, which also owns Burger King, Popeyes and Firehouse Subs. As of June 30, 2026, the Tim Hortons system included 6,209 restaurants worldwide.
Part of a Larger Ohio Push
The Sunbury Road restaurant has been in development for more than a year. Delaware City Council approved the plan in August 2025 after considering a proposal for a 1.642-acre site within the Glennwood Commons development. The commercial real estate firm involved in the transaction described the Delaware agreement as the first completed lease in a broader Tim Hortons USA expansion across Ohio. At the time, the company said 15 additional deals were in progress.
For Delaware customers, however, the significance is more immediate. The city now has a Tim Hortons serving its west side, one along the southern U.S. 23 corridor and a new east-side restaurant positioned for the morning commute. Opening-day hours and any introductory promotions have not yet been publicly announced.
