What does it take to create a thriving downtown?

That question is at the center of the latest episode of The DLZ Podcast, produced by the Delaware County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Posted June 15, Episode 3 features Courtney Graf, Executive Director of Main Street Delaware, in a conversation about the work happening behind the scenes to support local businesses, preserve historic character and create a downtown experience that serves residents and visitors alike.

For anyone who has spent time in downtown Delaware, the episode offers a closer look at the planning, volunteer commitment and steady investment that help keep the city’s historic core active, welcoming and distinctly local.

More Than Events

Main Street Delaware is often visible through the life it helps bring downtown, but the organization’s role extends well beyond public events. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and entirely volunteer-run organization, Main Street Delaware logs more than 5,600 volunteer hours each year. It is also the only economic development organization focused specifically on advocating for the downtown business district.

That advocacy includes working directly with business and building owners, offering free design consultations, business trainings and support intended to reduce barriers and strengthen downtown’s long-term vitality. The result is not just activity, but investment. Over the last 10 years, downtown Delaware has seen more than $60 million in private investment, with Main Street Delaware continuing to serve as a catalyst for that momentum.

The Living Room Of The Community

Main Street Delaware describes downtown as the living room of the community, a shared place that should feel comfortable, welcoming and useful to everyone who passes through it. That idea runs through much of the organization’s work. Its volunteers and leaders focus on the practical elements that shape how people experience downtown, including parking, wayfinding signage, historic preservation guidelines and public art criteria. Those efforts help connect downtown’s historic identity with present-day needs. They also make Main Street Delaware a partner not only for businesses and property owners, but for local government and the broader community.

A Locally Driven Effort

One of Main Street Delaware’s defining strengths is that its work is rooted locally. The organization’s goals are scaled to the needs of the community it serves, and its strategies depend on local participation and support.

That can mean hands-on volunteer work, long-term planning, research, relationship-building or simply showing up for the downtown district in consistent ways. Behind every storefront, streetscape improvement and public gathering is the quieter work of people investing their time, skills and passion.

For Main Street Delaware, that commitment is also personal. Volunteers are not only supporting a place. They are building friendships, strengthening civic pride and helping shape the character of the community one project at a time.
