As spring arrives in Delaware, the City is rolling out two essential maintenance programs that help keep our streets clean and our water flowing reliably. Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming street sweeping and hydrant flushing efforts taking place throughout early April.

🚛 Street Sweepers Return April 1: Keep Curbs Clear

Beginning Monday, April 1, Delaware’s street sweeping crew will resume its seasonal clean-up efforts, starting with neighborhoods that align with that day’s refuse collection routes. Signs will be placed at key neighborhood entrances ahead of sweeping activities to alert residents.

What you can do to help:
To allow the street sweeper full curb-to-curb access, residents are asked to remove vehicles and other obstructions from the street on scheduled sweeping days.

Street sweeping is more than just aesthetic — it’s a key part of Delaware’s storm water management program. Funded in part through monthly storm water utility fees, the program helps prevent clogged drains and protects water quality by removing debris from roadways.

2024 by the numbers:

  • 242.19 tons of debris collected
  • 2,560 miles of streets swept

🚿 Fire Hydrant Flushing Through April 4: What to Expect

Also taking place now through April 4, the City of Delaware’s hydrant flushing program is running daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This essential activity helps ensure that fire hydrants remain in top working condition and helps maintain high water quality across the city’s distribution system.

Heads up for water customers:
You may notice temporary discoloration in your tap water during the flushing period. This is a normal effect and not a health risk. Simply run your water until it clears. If the problem persists or you need help, contact:

  • Water Distribution Division: 740-203-1900
  • Utility Office (Option 4): 740-203-1250
