The City of Delaware has shared that progress on the culvert replacement project along Liberty Road is moving swiftly, surpassing initial timeline expectations. This essential infrastructure improvement project, which began on September 23, is focused on replacing aging drainage structures with more robust prefabricated concrete “box” structures.

Project Milestones and Next Steps

Crews have already completed the installation of these new concrete culvert structures, marking a significant step in the project. With this phase wrapped up, work will now transition to rebuilding the road base and berms, followed by resurfacing the portion of Liberty Road that was affected by the construction. The City of Delaware’s Public Utilities Department has expressed optimism that Liberty Road will be reopened between Hull Drive and Slack Road ahead of the anticipated 45-day project timeline.

An Investment in Storm Water Management

The $570,000 project is funded by monthly storm water fees, reflecting the city’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its infrastructure to manage stormwater efficiently. The culvert is a critical element of Delaware’s stormwater management system, directing runoff from the south and west sides of the city to the Olentangy River. Improved stormwater flow from the new culvert will reduce the risk of flooding, enhance road safety, and increase resilience against extreme weather events.

Community Impact and Next Phases

As the project nears completion, the city’s Public Utilities Department aims to minimize inconvenience to local residents and commuters. With the road expected to reopen ahead of schedule, this project exemplifies efficient resource allocation and project management. Additionally, Liberty Road’s new culvert will enhance local waterway protection, helping to safeguard the Olentangy River and surrounding ecosystems.
