Genoa Township property owners may have a new reason to contact their insurance agents following a significant improvement in the community’s fire protection rating. A 2025 assessment by the Insurance Services Office moved the Genoa Township Fire Department from Class 3 to Class 2, placing it among the top 7% of fire departments nationwide.
The upgraded rating took effect on June 1. ISO’s formal notification lists Genoa Township’s Public Protection Classification as 02/2X, reflecting the results of its analysis of the community’s structural fire suppression system.
For residents and commercial property owners, the change could carry a financial benefit. Insurance companies commonly use ISO classifications when evaluating fire risk and establishing property insurance rates. A higher classification does not automatically guarantee a lower premium, however. Each insurance company applies ISO information according to its own underwriting guidelines, claims experience, rating methods and business practices. That means the effect could vary from one policyholder to another.
Residents Encouraged To Contact Their Insurers
Genoa Township is encouraging property owners to call their insurance agents and ask whether the new Class 2 designation qualifies them for a premium adjustment.
An insurer may require documentation confirming the rating change before reconsidering a policy. The township has made ISO’s notification letter available for download through its website so residents can provide proof if requested. Property owners should specifically tell their agents that the new classification becomes effective June 1 and ask whether their policies can be reviewed after that date.
More Than An Insurance Number
The improved rating also provides an outside measure of the township’s fire protection capabilities.
ISO classifications are based on information gathered through the organization’s Public Protection Classification survey process. The resulting score serves as a benchmark for insurers while also helping fire departments evaluate their operations and justify future investments in personnel, equipment, water supply and emergency response resources.
For the Genoa Township Fire Department, the move from Class 3 to Class 2 represents national recognition of the department’s fire suppression system and the resources supporting it. For homeowners, it may also mean that better protection comes with a smaller insurance bill.
