Publisher’s Note: Each fall at Thanksgiving time, we bring you details of Christmastime doings at Spiegel Grove in Fremont, the home of Delaware native President Rutherford B. Hayes and his wife Lucy. Here’s what is taking place this year.

Each holiday season, Spiegel Grove in Fremont transforms into a festive wonderland honoring the spirit of the season. As the former home of President Rutherford B. Hayes and First Lady Lucy Hayes, the estate offers a blend of history, tradition, and holiday cheer. This year’s lineup, brought to you by the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, promises something for everyone—from cherished traditions like horse-drawn sleigh rides to new and exciting holiday events.

A Tradition of Model Trains

Kicking off the season is the beloved “Hayes Train Special” Model Train Display, which runs from Friday, Nov. 29 through Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025. A hallmark of the Presidential Christmas series, this exhibit delights visitors of all ages with intricate model train layouts weaving through holiday-themed displays.

For train enthusiasts, the Annual Model Train Clinic on Saturday, Dec. 7 is the perfect opportunity to get advice and tips on setting up or maintaining your own model train sets.

On Friday, Nov. 29, visitors can also enjoy Trackless Train Rides, a new favorite that lets guests take a miniature train ride through the scenic grounds of Spiegel Grove.

Family Fun with the Polar Express

Families will love the Polar Express Pajama Party, scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 1. Kids are encouraged to wear their coziest pajamas for an afternoon filled with holiday magic, storytelling, and festive activities. This event is always a crowd-pleaser, so plan ahead to secure your spot!

Lights, Sleigh Rides, and Victorian Elegance

On Friday, Dec. 13, the grounds will sparkle during the Lights of Spiegel Grove event. With twinkling holiday lights illuminating the estate, visitors can take in the sights, visit with Santa Claus, and revel in the joy of the season.

For history buffs, the Hayes Home Holidays on Friday, Dec. 20, and Saturday, Dec. 21 provide a unique look at Victorian-era holiday traditions. Tour the historic Hayes mansion, beautifully decorated for the season, and learn about the customs that shaped holiday celebrations in the late 19th century.

Horse-Drawn Rides Through Spiegel Grove
