This Thursday, Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS) volunteers, Steve Schmitt and Bill Rietz, will be presenting an engaging program on the history of swimming in Delaware County. The event will take place at The Barn at Stratford from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. You can register here, or simply drop by to join the fun.

Exploring Rivers, Ponds, Lakes, and Quarries

Steve and Bill will guide attendees through a nostalgic tour of the county’s swimming holes, including rivers, ponds, lakes, and quarries. These sites have been popular spots for generations of Delaware County residents looking to cool off and enjoy a swim during hot summer days. The duo will share stories and historical facts about each location, shedding light on how these places have evolved over the years.

Indoor and Outdoor Pools and Reservoir Beaches

In addition to natural swimming spots, the presentation will cover the development of indoor and outdoor swimming pools in the county. From community pools to private swim clubs, Steve and Bill will discuss how these facilities have contributed to the local culture of swimming. Beaches at some of Delaware County’s reservoirs will also be featured, highlighting their role in providing safe and enjoyable swimming environments for families.

Personal Memories and Fun Anecdotes

Both Steve and Bill swam for Delaware Hayes High School, and they promise to leave their Speedo suits at home for this event! They encourage attendees to bring their own memories and stories to share, making the evening a collaborative celebration of Delaware County’s swimming history. This program is not just a lecture but an opportunity for community members to reminisce about the fun times they had swimming in the county.
