The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is buzzing with excitement as several new projects are underway to enhance the visitor experience and improve animal habitats. From the expansion of the Bonobo Habitat to the installation of a state-of-the-art security system, and upgrades to the Elephant Yard and North America Trek, the zoo is committed to creating a safer, more engaging environment for both guests and animals.

These developments promise to make every visit to the zoo even more memorable. Here’s a sneak peek into the ongoing transformations that you can expect to see during your next visit.

Bonobo Habitat Expansion

The Columbus Zoo is thrilled to announce the near completion of the new Bonobo Habitat. Doubling the space from the previous enclosure, this habitat promises to offer an enriched environment for the bonobos. Guests will soon be able to watch these intelligent primates explore their new indoor and outdoor areas. The gradual introduction of the bonobos to their new habitat ensures their comfort and well-being. Stay tuned for updates on the grand opening!

EVOLV Security System Installation

Safety is a top priority at the Columbus Zoo. To enhance guest security, construction of the new Guest Entry Security Pavilion is underway. This pavilion will house the cutting-edge EVOLV security system, already in use at Zoombezi Bay. Utilizing AI technology, the system can efficiently screen over 6,000 visitors per hour. Expected to be operational by late summer 2024, this upgrade will significantly improve entry efficiency and safety.

Expanding the Elephant Yard

The elephants at the Columbus Zoo are getting a new and improved yard! The ongoing construction across from Wild Burger and Conservation Lake includes the removal of old fencing and rockwork to provide more space for these majestic animals. Visitors can still enjoy viewing the elephants in their current habitats until the project concludes in October 2024.

North America Trek Enhancements

Exciting renovations are happening in the North America region of the zoo. New habitats are being developed for the bald eagles, black bears, river otters, and Mexican wolves. While the bald eagles will be temporarily off-exhibit, guests can still view the other animals during the construction phase. Peek through the walkway fence windows to see the progress and visit the North America region page for more details.
