Ohio’s role in the Civil War extended far beyond the thousands of soldiers who left their homes to serve in Union armies.
On Tuesday, August 18, the Delaware County Historical Society will explore that larger story during “How Ohio Won the Civil War,” a free community program at The Barn at Stratford, 2690 Stratford Road in Delaware. The program will run from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
During the Civil War, Ohio supplied large numbers of soldiers and sailors to the Union cause while also becoming an important transportation hub for troops and supplies. Ohio factories produced weapons, uniforms and other materials needed to sustain the war effort. Those combined contributions helped make the state a critical part of the Union campaign to defeat the Confederacy and restore the nation.
A Civil War Story With Local Connections
Presenting the program will be Mike Wise, president of the Big Walnut Area Historical Society, who will portray his second great-uncle, Captain George Wise.
Captain Wise served as an adjutant with the 43rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, placing him within one of the many Ohio regiments that fought across the Civil War’s western theater. His story also carries a connection to Sunbury through Major General William S. Rosecrans, one of the community’s best-known historical figures. Rosecrans became one of the Union’s most prominent generals, commanding major armies and taking part in campaigns that shaped the course of the war in Kentucky, Tennessee and elsewhere.
Through the perspective of Captain Wise, the presentation will examine both the experiences of Ohio soldiers and the broader economic and logistical contribution the state made to the Union war effort.
History Comes to The Barn
The program will take place at The Barn at Stratford, part of the Delaware County Historical Society’s Stratford property. Admission is free. Donations to help support the Historical Society’s operating costs are appreciated.
