Here’s an idea for some family-friendly fun and education during the time when Delaware Countians are heeding calls to stay at home.

What better time is there to get to know Delaware County’s best-known native son just a bit better?

That is the opportunity this month during the closure of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums in Fremont. While the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums is shut down for the health and safety of all during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is offering online activities patrons can do.

The Hayes Home, museum and presidential library are closed until Tuesday, March 31. Staff will continue to monitor the situation closely and determine whether the facilities can reopen on Wednesday, April 1.

The Spiegel Grove grounds remain open.

The list of available activity options includes:

A political cartoon contest for kids in grades 6-8 and 9-12. Winners will have their cartoon displayed in the upcoming exhibit “The Press & The Presidency.”

An opportunity to virtually walk through the museum through a 3-D scan.

Videos sharing in-depth information about parts of the Hayes Home, museum and grounds.

The Ohio Obituary Index and other online genealogy resources are still available for use by genealogy researchers, and librarians are fulfilling obit orders.

Recipes of First Lady Lucy Hayes.

Book recommendations.

A self-guided tour of the grounds.

Hayes Presidential staff plans to add more videos and things to do to the website in the coming days. For the full list and updates, visit https://www.rbhayes.org/news/2020/03/13/general/hayes-presidential-to-be-closed-through-march-31/.
