The Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) latest edition of The Loop has arrived just in time for the busy Memorial Day travel season, offering valuable insights and tips for a safe and enjoyable journey across the state. Holiday Travel Safety Measures
As Memorial Day approaches, Ohio’s roads are set to be bustling with activity. AAA forecasts that 38.4 million Americans, including 1.65 million Ohioans, will be traveling more than 50 miles from home. ODOT is urging travelers to prioritize safety by checking their vehicle’s battery, tires, and windshield wipers before hitting the road. While ODOT aims to remove as many orange barrels as possible, ongoing work zones will remain in areas such as I-75 in Cincinnati and Dayton, I-70/71 in downtown Columbus, I-70 in Zanesville, and several locations in Akron. Drivers are reminded to slow down, maintain extra space, and follow all signage in these work zones.
Ohio Tourism Day Extravaganza
Ohio Tourism Day brought a wave of excitement to the State House lawn, attracting thousands of visitors. With 120 partners from across the state, including attractions, destinations, and convention visitors bureaus, the event is a cornerstone for planning Ohio summer vacations. Tourism continues to be a significant economic driver, generating 233 million visits and $53 billion in sales in 2022, and supporting 378,000 jobs. This annual event is described as the “Super Bowl” for Ohio tourism, highlighting the state’s vibrant attractions and destinations.
STRIDE Internship Program Kicks Off
ODOT’s STRIDE internship program is off to a strong start this season. Featured in The Loop was intern Elijah Harvey, who shared his enthusiasm for the program and the opportunities it provides. The internship offers hands-on experience and is part of ODOT’s commitment to fostering new talent in the field of transportation.
Celebrating DriveOhio Byways Month
May marks DriveOhio Byways Month, celebrating Ohio’s 27 scenic byways that showcase the state’s rich history and picturesque landscapes. From the Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail to the Hocking Hills and the Ohio River, these routes offer something for everyone. This year, special attention is given to the Johnny Appleseed Byway, celebrating Johnny’s 250th birthday.
