Special to 1808Delaware

The Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS) today announced its latest children’s program offering, a workshop entitled “Artistic Traditions & Remembering Me.”

Two workshop sessions will be offered on the afternoon of Sunday, May 7, at The Barn at Stratford (2690 Stratford Road, Delaware), adjacent to the historic Meeker Homestead & Museum. The workshops will invite children ages nine and older (with an accompanying adult) to design and color their own Fraktur and a keepsake silhouette self-portrait.

Frakturs are ornately decorated pieces of German-American folk art that recognize important celebrations, such as weddings and christenings. Last year, DCHS secured funding from the Ohio Arts Council to begin restoration on their own Fraktur commemorating the baptism of Michael Gross(en), a member of the Gross family who came by covered wagon from Hampton County in Pennsylvania to Troy Township in Delaware County, Ohio in 1821.

“Education and creating a lasting love of history is a big part of the DCHS mission,” said Donna Meyer, DCHS Executive Director. “Our volunteers and local historians take much pride in engaging community youth in programs and hands-on learning opportunities that bring history to life and encourage an interest in understanding the past for future generations. This promises to be a fun, creative event that will get the whole family excited about our shared history.”

The event is open to the public at a cost of $15 per child. Museum volunteers will be onsite to guide the activities and share related historical trivia. All materials will be provided, and participants should plan to arrive at least 15-minutes prior to their session. Sessions will last approximately 90-minutes and are limited to 10 children each. Once tickets are sold out, those interested may join the workshop waitlist by emailing info@delawareohiohistory.org.
