On Sunday, March 23 at 3:00 PM, the Central Ohio Symphony will captivate audiences at Gray Chapel on the Ohio Wesleyan University campus. Under the baton of conductor Jaime Morales-Matos, the orchestra will present a stirring program featuring the works of Johannes Brahms, Carl Nielsen, and contemporary composer Gala Flagello.
A Contemporary Opener: Bravado by Gala Flagello
The concert begins with “Bravado,” a 2023 composition by Gala Flagello. Originally written for the prestigious Tanglewood Orchestra, this piece showcases Flagello’s innovative style and dynamic orchestration. The composer will be in attendance to introduce her work, offering audiences a deeper understanding of her creative process and the inspirations behind the music.
A Masterpiece of Romantic Virtuosity: Brahms’ Violin Concerto
The centerpiece of the afternoon will be Johannes Brahms’ legendary Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77. This 1878 masterpiece is a hallmark of the Romantic repertoire, demanding both technical brilliance and deep emotional expression. Renowned violinist Dylana Jenson, who earned international acclaim as the Silver Medalist at the Tchaikovsky Competition and has graced the stage of Carnegie Hall, will bring her artistry to the solo part. The concerto unfolds in three movements:
- Allegro non troppo – A bold and expansive opening that weaves lyrical themes with fiery virtuosity.
- Adagio – A sublime, songlike movement featuring one of Brahms’ most beloved melodies.
- Allegro giocoso, ma non troppo vivace – A jubilant, folk-inspired finale that demands both precision and exuberance.
The Four Temperaments: Nielsen’s Symphony No. 2
Closing the program is Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 2, “The Four Temperaments.” Inspired by a painting depicting the four classical temperaments—Choleric, Phlegmatic, Melancholic, and Sanguine—this 1902 symphony is a vivid musical portrait of human personality types:
- Allegro collerico (Choleric) – A fiery and impassioned opening movement, capturing an intense and restless spirit.
- Allegro comodo e flemmatico (Phlegmatic) – A calm and steady second movement, reflecting an easygoing and serene disposition.
- Andante malincolico (Melancholic) – A deeply introspective and expressive third movement, brimming with longing and poetic beauty.
- Allegro sanguineo—Marziale (Sanguine) – A triumphant and optimistic finale, exuding confidence and joy.
An Afternoon of Musical Brilliance
This concert offers a rich tapestry of sound, blending the drama of Brahms, the vivid characterization of Nielsen, and the fresh voice of Gala Flagello.
