The Adaptive Sports Connection (ASC), based in Powell, is set to expand its transformative adaptive kayaking program thanks to a $10,019.17 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The funding, part of ODNR’s $350,000 in statewide boating education grants, will enable ASC to purchase new kayaks and a trailer, ensuring more individuals with disabilities can safely enjoy Ohio’s waterways.
“These grants are an investment in our communities and in the safety of those who enjoy Ohio’s waterways,” said ODNR Director Mary Mertz. “By supporting programs that promote boating safety and water recreation, we are ensuring that all Ohioans have the opportunity to learn safe and responsible boating practices that will last a lifetime.”
Supporting Safe and Accessible Boating for All
Adaptive Sports Connection is a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of children, adults, and veterans with disabilities through outdoor sports and recreation. Its kayaking program, one of the largest adaptive boating initiatives in Central Ohio, provides a welcoming and secure environment for participants of all abilities.
In 2024 alone, ASC’s adaptive kayaking program hosted 817 visits across 35 events, offering transformative experiences for individuals and their families. With the addition of new equipment funded by the ODNR grant, ASC plans to expand its reach, making kayaking and boating education accessible to even more Central Ohioans.
Grants That Make a Difference
The ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft awarded grants to 14 organizations this year, totaling $350,000. The funds are designated for purchasing boats, life jackets, trailers, and other essential safety equipment, strengthening local boating education efforts for youth and adults alike.
Grants like these are funded by Ohio’s Waterways Safety Fund, supported by the state motor fuel tax, watercraft registration and titling fees, and contributions from the U.S. Coast Guard. By reinvesting in local programs, ODNR ensures that boating safety education remains a priority, promoting responsible use of Ohio’s waterways.
A Broader Reach in 2024
This year, the increased funding allowed ODNR to support more organizations and allocate larger awards. Local nonprofits, schools, colleges, and park districts across the state will benefit, fostering a culture of safe and enjoyable water recreation.
Last year, over $220,000 in grants provided critical support to outdoor-focused organizations. In 2024, that number climbed significantly, highlighting the growing commitment to boating safety and education in Ohio.
The Ripple Effect of Boating Education
For organizations like ASC, these grants represent more than just financial assistance—they provide the means to create lasting memories and meaningful connections for participants. As ASC continues to collaborate with regional partners, the nonprofit remains a cornerstone for accessibility and inclusion in outdoor recreation.
With the ODNR grant paving the way for expanded programming, ASC is poised to make an even greater impact in 2025, ensuring that all Ohioans, regardless of ability, can enjoy the beauty and freedom of Ohio’s waterways.
