For those in central and north central Ohio seeking a unique and seasonally fitting activity this October, Alum Creek State Park offers just the right blend of history, sport, and Halloween fun.

On Friday, October 13, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, attendees will not only be introduced to the ancient sport of archery but will also get a chance to test their skills on special pumpkin targets.

The archery event will be held at the campground amphitheater, located at 2911 S. Old State Road, Delaware, OH 43015. For convenient parking, attendees can utilize the camp store parking lot. From there, a small trail at the back end of the lot will guide visitors directly to the amphitheater. As an additional pointer for attendees, it’s essential to wear closed-toe shoes, and children must always be accompanied by an adult for safety.

While this event offers a fun and thematic twist with its pumpkin targets, the origins of archery date back thousands of years. Deriving from the Latin word “arcus” for bow, archery historically played a vital role in hunting and combat. Now, in contemporary times, archery has morphed into a primarily competitive sport and recreational activity. The oldest evidence of bow and arrow usage traces back to South African sites like the Sibudu Cave, with discoveries of bone and stone arrowheads that are believed to be between 72,000 to 60,000 years old.

While archery is an exhilarating activity, it’s paramount to prioritize safety. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and its naturalist educators emphasize that recreation programs and activities come with inherent risks. Thus, participants must acknowledge that any potential injuries or property damage during the program are not under the responsibility of the ODNR or its staff. Hence, ensuring the presence of a guardian for children and following safety guidelines becomes crucial.

For those curious souls in Ohio keen on blending history, sport, and the spirit of Halloween, this archery event promises an unforgettable experience. It’s more than just hitting the bullseye; it’s about embracing a tradition that’s been part of human culture for tens of thousands of years — but with a seasonal pumpkin twist!
