It’s one month later, and the citizens of Delaware County appear to have taken their duty to have themselves counted very much to heart..

April 1 was known as “Census Day” as the official count takes place on that date. On that day, the United States Census Bureau reported that the national rate of census returns stood at 36.2%, with Ohio’s pegged at 39.3%.

As of today, those numbers stand at 56.3% and 61.5%, respectively.

Delaware County not only has a rate which exceeds both of those figures, but it actually leads all but one county in Ohio on a percentage basis.

Current rates for Delaware County and surrounding Ohio counties are as follows:

  • Delaware — 71.8%
  • Union — 70.3%
  • Licking — 64.8%
  • Knox — 61.8%
  • Marion — 58.7%
  • Morrow — 57.9%
  • Franklin — 57.9%

Only Medina County’s 73.8% rate is higher than Delaware’s.

Individual cities and villages in Delaware County had the following response rates:

  • Powell — 77.9%
  • Westerville — 76.0%
  • Shawnee Hills — 72.6%
  • Ostrander — 71.9%
  • Sunbury — 70.8%
  • Delaware — 69.8%
  • Ashley — 33.0%

Perhaps reflecting the current public health situation, over 90% of Delaware County respondents did so through a means other than the US mail — most online.

It is hard to exaggerate the importance of an accurate census and making certain that everyone is counted. As shared by the US Census Bureau, “The results of the 2020 Census will help determine how hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funding flow into communities every year for the next decade. That funding shapes many different aspects of every community, no matter the size, no matter the location.”
