At last September’s Hidden Spaces Tour in downtown Delaware, participants were given a preview of a hoped-for coming attraction.

Among the many spaces open to public view was the Sheets House at 20 East William Street, next to the former Gazette Building/COhatch’s “The Newsstand.”

Initially considered for demolition and replacement by a Welcome Center facility, many in the community and on the City’s Historic Preservation Committee saw value in the 130 year old structure.

Leading the conversation was revitalization organization Main Street Delaware, which saw the Italianate house itself as a potential “Welcome Center with information about local events, public restrooms, and offices and storage for Main Street Delaware.”

With a green light given for a property lease, and with a move-in goal of this summer, the organization set out on a $210,000 funding campaign to renovate and maintain the Sheets House.

Fast forward to now.

Over the last several weeks, a graphic shown on Main Street Delaware’s website and social media has detailed the status of that campaign. As of the date of this article, it appears to show that at least $150,000 has already been raised.

They say that “pictures are worth a thousand words.” In that case, below are 3,000 words from 1808Delaware’s visit to the Welcome Center in September. Click on any image for a larger view.
