The Ohio Wildlife Center (OWC), a premier nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife rehabilitation and education, is kicking off 2025 with engaging community events that combine fitness, safety, and encounters with Ohio’s native wildlife. Whether you’re interested in practical self-defense skills or a high-energy jazzercise session, OWC’s offerings this January are sure to educate and inspire.


Basics of Self Defense for Nature Enthusiasts

Date: January 11, 2025
Time: 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Location: Ohio Wildlife Center Education Center, 6131 Cook Road, Powell

Exploring Ohio’s great outdoors is a fantastic way to connect with nature, but feeling prepared and confident is key. The OWC is hosting a Basics of Self Defense class to help participants gain the skills and knowledge needed to stay safe while enjoying the wilderness.

This hybrid event includes a presentation on situational awareness and hands-on physical demonstrations. Experienced instructors will guide attendees through fundamental self-defense techniques in a supportive environment.

What You’ll Need:

  • Comfortable clothing suitable for physical activity.

Bonus: Every participant will leave with a complimentary pepper spray to enhance personal safety.

Age Requirement: Participants must be 16 years or older.

Jazzercise with Geoff and Friends

Date: January 12, 2025
Time: 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM
Location: Ohio Wildlife Center Education Center, 6131 Cook Road, Powell

Jump-start your weekend with a lively Jazzercise with Geoff session! Led by experienced instructor Susie Vance, this hour-long workout blends aerobic dance moves with strength training for a fun and effective fitness experience.

After the workout, attendees will enjoy a special visit from one of OWC’s beloved animal ambassadors, including a flying squirrel. While these furry friends won’t be busting a move, their appearance is sure to add a unique touch to the morning!

What You’ll Need:

  • Comfortable workout clothes and a water bottle.

About the Ohio Wildlife Center

The Ohio Wildlife Center has been a beacon of conservation and education since its founding in 1984. Nestled on a scenic 20-acre campus in Powell, the Center is home to nearly 60 non-releasable animal ambassadors, including bald eagles, owls, foxes, and amphibians.

Through its education programs, the OWC reaches over 30,000 people annually, providing unique opportunities to connect with Ohio’s wildlife. The facility also serves as a haven for injured and orphaned animals, ensuring their care and rehabilitation.
