Playwright Sarah Ruhl’s touching and poetic drama “Eurydice” gives new resonance to the story of Orpheus descending into the Underworld to bring back his bride by retelling the Greek myth from her brave, compelling point of view.
Ohio Wesleyan University’s Department of Theatre & Dance will present four performances of “Eurydice” at 8 PM on February 13-15 and at 2 PM on February 16. The play runs about 90 minutes without intermission, contains adult themes, and features some performers dressed similarly to clowns or mimes.
The production is being directed by Bradford Sadler, Ohio Wesleyan Class of 2005, now a member of the university’s theatre faculty.
“This play deals with love and loss, which are aspects of life to which all of us can relate, no matter what our disparate backgrounds are,” said Sadler, who earned his Master of Fine Arts from Florida Atlantic University. “It possesses an amazing depth of heart, and its focus on the precious human connections between us and the people we care for makes it an evening of theatre perfectly fitted to its Valentine’s Day weekend performance dates.”
Seven students perform in the production: junior Miko Harper of Atlanta, Georgia; sophomore Aaron Eicher of West Salem, Ohio; senior Adam Lieser of Columbus, Ohio; sophomore Max Haupt from Madison, New Jersey; junior Margaret R. Welsh from Ashville, Ohio; freshman Alex Dolph from Middletown, Ohio; and freshman Camy Dodd from Cincinnati, Ohio.
Scenic design is by guest artist Edith D. Wadkins; lighting design is by junior Jerrod Ward of Loudonville, Ohio; and costume design is by OWU Costume Shop Manager Jacqueline Shelley. Ohio Wesleyan sophomore Jasmine Lew of Fremont, California, is serving as stage manager.
“Eurydice” will be performed on the Studio Theatre Stage of OWU’s Chappelear Drama Center, 45 Rowland Ave., Delaware. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for senior citizens and non-Ohio Wesleyan students, and free for Ohio Wesleyan students with a valid OWU ID.
